Activation of space through the arts – what can the arts do for space?

Introduction – from space to place

Bonds established between people and the urban environment in which they live, work and play are critical for creating a stronger sense of place that resonates with self-identity and shared identity (Cho, Heng, & Trivic, 2016). Arts and culture initiatives have a great capacity to reveal and enhance this identity and thus contribute towards building a sense of place for the community (Soule, Hodgson, & Beavers, 2016). The concepts of place and place attachment are useful for exploring how the arts might bring the community together to shape public space through the process of creative placemaking.
